ex vivo tests: they are performed on human skin explants, resulting from surgery and kept alive artificially. More reliable than an in vitro test, they are a perfect alternative to in vivo studies, to carry out tests that present a risk for the volunteer, especially pollution exposure.
Immunolabeling: A cell biology technique whereby a target molecule is colored in order to quantify its intensity.
Our scientists have identified two biological markers of pollution-induced stress: AhR molecule (aryl Hydrocarbon receptor) and MT-1 protein.
Activated by pollution, these two molecules trigger chain reactions in our body. As a result, oxidative stress increases, skin ages prematurely, the complexion becomes dull and pigment spots appear.
The anti-pollution efficacy of SYHA skincare has been tested by the independent laboratory BIO-EC, using a unique technology dedicated to ex vivo studies: POLLUBOX®. This device allows the vaporization of pollutants (a mixture of hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and diesel particles) in the form of a cloud that is put in contact with the surface of the skin (kept alive skin explants) to be as close as possible to physiological conditions.
AhR and MT-1 concentrations were measured by immunolabelling.
Results: The Intense/Light Cream shows exceptional protective power against fine particles pollution while activating the skin's natural defense mechanisms:
1. 100% of AhR and MT-1 overexpression is inhibited;
2. AhR and MT-1 levels remained at a lower level than the control explants, which had not been exposed to pollution.

Blue light emits high-energy radiations that are at the boundary between visible light and UVA light. This is why overexposure to screens - almost inevitable today - leads to accelerated photoageing of the skin. Our scientists have identified two markers of oxidative stress induced by blue light: the molecule 8-OhdG, which is a product of DNA oxidation, and the enzyme MMP-1, responsible for collagen degradation.
The anti-blue light efficacy of SYHA skincare products has been assessed by the independent laboratory BIO-EC, using a unique process: SOLARBOX®. This device allows to expose skin explants (kept alive skin tissue) to blue light radiation.
8-OhdG and MMP-1 expression was measured by immunolabelling, a technique consisting in coloring a target molecule in order to quantify its intensity.
Results: The SYHA Serum shows exceptional protective power against blue light:
1. It inhibits 100% of the overexpression of 8-OhdG and MMP-1
2. We observed levels of 8-OhdG and MMP-1 at a lower level than the control explants, which had not been exposed to blue light.
Beyond a full protection against blue light, the SYHA Serum activates the skin’s defense mechanisms to protect it from natural oxidative stress.
The anti-ageing efficacy, the smoothing and firming power of SYHA cosmetics have been instrumentally measured by the independent laboratory BIO-EC using in vivo studies.
- Skin’s roughness and wrinkle depth were measured at the underside of the eye and in the crow's feet region using a 3D fringe projection scanning technique.
- Skin’s firmness and elasticity were measured by cutometry: a sophisticated method used to evaluate skin’s mechanical properties.
The moisturizing power assessment was carried out by the independent laboratory BIO-EC using instrumental measurement. Skin moisture is measured immediately after application of the product using a corneometer. Measures are taken every 2 hours to ensure effective moisture over time.
The cleansing power of the SYHA anti-pollution foam was instrumentally measured by the independent laboratory IDEA Clinic through an in vivo study on 12 female volunteers aged 38 to 67 years presenting all skin types. A mixture of carbon micro particles was used as a model of air pollution. The efficacy of the anti-pollution cleansing foam was assessed through image acquisition and quantification of dark pixels before and after cleansing, using the C-Cube video dermoscope.
Result: 99.9% of the pollution particles are eliminated.
The make-up removal efficacy of the CLEANSING FOAM has been instrumentally measured by the independent laboratory DERMSCAN through an in vivo study on 20 female volunteers aged 18 to 68 years old presenting all skin types. A standard foundation had been applied to the volunteers' cheeks. The make-up removal efficacy was assessed through before/after shots in UV light and analyzed with Photoshop (pixel quantification)
Result: Make-up removal efficacy was observed in 100% of volunteers.
